Arizona’s Tragic Shootings

As everyone knows by now, yesterday marked the day when Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and six other people(including a 66 year old judge and a nine year old girl)were shot by a gun wielding madman, with only Giffords surviving from that shootout. The madman was caught, who was revealed to be 22 year old Jared Lee Loughner and fully exposed as a pretty freaky dude via his YouTube page(that contained lots of videos on hypnosis)and he’s up on some very serious charges, especially since he’s now going to become a convicted murderer and an attempted assassin.

But reviewing what happened is pretty much where it ends here for me,for there’s two main things that do really disturb me about this case, this one of them being the ever-rivalous political issue between the Democrats and the Republicans, and how Sarah Palin is suddenly becoming the scapegoat of all of this, courtesy of a fantasy map that she displayed on the ‘Net that pinpointed her targets of politicans she despises, including Giffords, with a rifle target scope pointed at each of her ranges, for as much as I despise Palin and have always trashtalked about her for the last three years(see my former blog at http://blog.myspace.com/stevenmillan for that very history),I’m not going to place the blame on her(like so many folks are doing),since it’s just sheer irony that an insane madman conducted that assault after she placed that on-line map and that it was Loughlon and not Palin who was behind those dreadful shootings, for it’ll be interesting to see if Palin’s political career will survive and if this tragic event will either bring together the Republicans and the Democrats for a much-needed peace truce or just further divide them apart(and lengthen their rivalous war between them).

The other issue that disturbs me even more is the way the state of Arizona is being slammed and depicted as a straight-up racist state, via Arizona governor Jan Brewer’s anti-illegal immigrant law,for Arizona actually isn’t a racist state and it was always depicted(in the past)as a place full of sun, desert, and various activities(such as Lake Havasu[a place best known for annual Spring Break hijinks and mayhem]),and was even depicted as a fun-filled place in The Scorpions’ 1982 song ARIZONA,for things have really changed and Arizona has gotten to be a more conservative state(ala Texas and Florida)as time has moved on(with Public Enemy making an 1991 anti-racism song about it called BY THE TIME I GET TO ARIZONA),for I’m surprised that Robert Rodriguez didn’t include a female governor villainess in his MACHETE film(with the likes of Nastassja Kinski,Sybil Danning,or Pam Grier in that very role),a film so ripe of anti-racist and anti-right wing tones. All because those shootings happened in Arizona doesn’t make it an evil state or anything else, which is downright ridiculous, since a state is just a state, regardless of its laws(whether or not we agree with them).

And despite the world having become a much darker place since 9/11 and the grim and serious political and on-line social tone of nowadays, placing the blame on Republicans and a conservative state isn’t going to change the fact that a loony and unbalanced gunsman pulled the trigger that brought forth this tragedy, for it won’t bring the vicitms back and it won’t bring forth any cure for anything, since political scapegoating and fingerpointing doesn’t solve any problems and will only increase more despair and negativity than a positive way to fully close the door on this very ugly incident.

I'm just a simple genre cinema fan(NOT a fanboy and NOT a geek)who widely glimpses onto the latest in cinema news, cinema events, and world news of the day events, and just to warn you(especially if you're one of those politically correct elitists,or strongly despise folks that never brownnose the genre cinema media press):I do sharply bite.
